The Fun Machine is a video game console developed by GemWay for use on the PlayStation 3 video game LittleBigPlanet 2. Release dates were never announced nor finalized, including that of the original release (except for the v2.0 update). Although the release dates are unknown, it known that the original v1.0 release date was a short time before (or on) the 25th of November 2012.

Before becoming an official T-Games console (when Logan B. became a Community Manager of T-Games), the Fun Machine was originally an unlicensed creation, made to prove the point that the creator could make a game console of their own.

EtymologyEdit

Unlike other T-Games consoles, the name Fun Machine was taken from a video game console in the Homestar Runner universe, after naming the console became difficult for the creator.[1]

Updates and SubconsolesEdit

The Fun Machine has gone through (an estimate of) 14 updates. Unfortunately, not all of the update logs have been archived by T-Games, and many of the Fun Machine versions were wiped from T-Games storage when newer versions were released to save storage space. The T-Games Archives have since been able to retrieve several versions via various means. However, many of these archived versions were lost in the January data loss.

Early models (versions 1.0-1.2)Edit

The first builds of the Fun Machine were very unconventional; they contained controversial features, DLC, and were very undistinguished (to the point that they were literally blocks of Chrome with screens and giant rim lights - these lights were not a neon rim a la modern Fun Machine, NeXT, or Quadratum, but were 4 poorly placed Neon Light objects arranged around the screen border). Logan B. described these development versions of the Fun Machine as "Poorly-built attempts to make a [video game] console."

Update v1.3Edit

Update v1.3 completely rebuilt the Fun Machine. The console's structure itself was refreshed to properly fit into Small Grid, the screen was redefined, the Neon Lights were replaced with the neon rim, the 'Settings and Stuff' chip was added - containing the first ever Complex Setting, and the power indicators were removed.

Update v1.7Edit

Update v1.7 added the controversial 'Sentience' feature.

Version 2.0Edit

The v2.0 update was purposely developed to be large update, to celebrate reaching v2.0. Some of the new features consisted of: Sentience Evil (see Features/Sentience for more info), remote-control & Move compatibility, and the Solar logo change.

Non-archived versionsEdit

Because the Fun Machine was created before T-Games Archives was established, all versions were deleted after becoming outdated. Most of these deleted models have been recovered, however some are yet to be found. These non-archived models include versions 1.1, 1.4, 1.6, and 1.8.

T-Games urges anyone with Fun Machine models that are not in the T-Games Archives to contact SP_Sour on PSN.

Mini MachineEdit

The Mini Machine is a Fun Machine designed for low-space and low-complexity areas, similar to the NeXT S and GameExpo II Lite. It takes up extremely little physical space and level complexity compared to the regular Fun Machine console. It removes several features from the original Fun Machine console in order to reach this aim.

Music MachineEdit

The Music Machine was planned to be a Fun Machine console that only plays music files. The idea was considered, but scrapped after realizing that this would diminish the originality of the pre-existing console lines. An alpha was created, but only for a proof-of-concept. It was lost in the January data loss.

FeaturesEdit

Fun Machine Marquee

This is the preset marquee that can be chosen with the 'Automatic Marquee' option. A game can be seen playing.

The Fun Machine has many original features, some of which contribute to the outside appearance of the console.

MarqueeEdit

A marquee describes any lit-up nameplate at the top or near the top of the Fun Machine. An automatic marquee is available through a setting.

Complex SettingsEdit

Complex Settings are not regular toggles, but rather features that use Selectors to choose a variable state of a feature. Such features include multiple startups, which is a 5-state Selector that determines which of 5 alternate startup and shutdown themes will be shown when used.

Settings WingsEdit

The Settings Wings' appearance as of an early v2.3 beta.

 Settings Wings are extendable and retractible dashboards that appear on any side of the console when activated. These dashboards can contain all toggle settings and the chips for specific sets of settings, and also hold Credits and the Update Log. Alternating red-green lights are on the ends.


SentienceEdit

When a certain startup in the multiple startup settings has been selected, chips activate that choose behaviors for the Fun Machine to execute as if it were a communicating and sentient being.

Sentience ChattyEdit

When the Fun Machine unit is turned off, it can randomly activate one of around 25 sub-behaviors. These mostly consists of spoken phrases, however it can also make eeries noises or make the screen flash.[2]

Sentience HurtEdit

Another behavior, "Sentience Hurt," allows it to react to projectiles (water, electricity, plasma, fire) by flashing the screen, making an alarm sound, and exclaiming one of 4 fitting phrases regardless of whether it is on or off.

Sentience EvilEdit

The Sentience feature also can turn the console corrupt and evil: a happy or sad pixellated face is displayed depending on whether the console is turning on or off, and if a person were to make both these faces appear at once, by switching the power when the startup/shutdown sequence is active, the "Sentience Evil" behavior starts. An evil face appears (it smiles similarly to the face that is displayed whilst starting up, but is colored and spaced more like the face that is displayed whilst shutting down) and laughs. It tells the player that they cannot tell it what to do any longer, then laughs and disappears. While the Sentience Evil behavior is active, the player cannot manually turn the console off, use Next/Previous, or toggle the Settings Wings. However, a remote can be used to turn it on or off. The machine will randomly turn on/off, open/close the Settings Wings, or activate Next/Previous, and a pink light covering the console and some surrounding area is emitted from the marquee area regardless of the settings for the marquee light. It also has the capacity to corrupt other consoles and kill players in this mode.

These behaviors can only be turned off by switching the startup from the one that activated them to something else. If the Sentience Evil behavior is active while this happens, a horror/death scream can be heard coming from the machine.

Move Menu and SlotEdit

The Fun Machine has a second 'slot' under the cartridge slot to be used with the Move Seats and Move Seats + Menu accessories. This allows for both the regular Controlinators and the Movinators to be in use at once. The Move Menu, included with the Movinators in the Move Seats + Menu, is a special menu that is controlled using the Move controller. When the Move controller is pointed at the screen, a cursor will appear that can be aimed. Highlighted icons grow bright and are selected with the T button. The Selector-based Complex Settings and the built-in games can be accessed via it.

ReceptionEdit

Upon release, the Fun Machine was widely undiscovered in the community however, since its hub was published, it has received a significantly larger amount of recognition and overall community support. This, in turn, lead to larger amounts of enthusiasm towards the console by the developer.

EngineEdit

The Fun Machine operates on a Multi-Gateway Dual-Engine [Standard|Auto-Fixed] Engine called "FM_02" developed by SP_Sour.

The Mini Machine operates on a Standard Engine called "FM_03" developed by SP_Sour. It is a modified version of the FM_02 engine.
